The internet can be a useful tool. It provides us with access to a wide variety of information. But just like other tools, it can be abused. Some information on the internet may not be suitable for some viewers especially young people. Safe use of internet for kids must be taught before the keyboard and modem are readily available in an unsupervised environment. Therefore, the pros, as well as the cons should always be taught first to those who want to use it. Of course, it does not mean that the internet is merely a place full of undesirable materials. It is not designed to nor intended to be a place to obtain harmful materials. It is just like the television and other media that was designed to serve a useful purpose but has been abused.
Extreme caution must be noted when using a computer chat room. In chatting, although you would like to believe that you are engaging in enjoyable conversations with people your own age, it is not always true. One problem in communicating with a stranger is that he may not be who he appears to be. Some mad men are out there waiting for innocent victims. Nevertheless, there will always be ways for you to stay safe online.
Keep the computer in a room where the whole family can use it. Discuss and set reasonable rules and guidelines for computer use. Teach your kids never to give out personal details like name, address passwords or email addresses or even photographs unless they know and trust the person concerned. Never let your kids meet someone they have met over the internet without your permission and only when you or a responsible adult can be present. Learn as much as you can about the internet and the services it provides. This way, you are making your computer a worthwhile investment.
